The Music In Me

Over the years the Merry Makers have been the subject of various media stories on television, in newspapers and magazines, but now their story has been told in a feature length documentary film.

Made by Nigel Traill and Anne Kenyon, The Music In Me is a moving documentary that is being entered in film festivals around the world and is intended to be sold for tv, cinema & dvd release.  Journalist, Author & Human Rights Activist Jeff McMullen called it “… a gentle and most moving masterpiece filled with the joy and the pain of human nature.  It is the exquisite rendering of the stories of mothers and their children that makes this film truly memorable.”

The filmmakers intend for the film to be sold for television, cinema and dvd release both nationally and internationally & hope that eventually this film will be seen by every high school student throughout Australia.

Australian Film wins at Monaco

SYDNEY, 14th December, 2007:

The Music In Me - the debut documentary feature by Sydney filmmakers, Nigel Traill and Anne Kenyon has won two Angel Film Awards at the influential Monaco International Film Festival.

At this prestigious film festival which celebrates non violent films, the moving Australian film won The Angel Humanitarian Award and as well as the Best Documentary film, sharing this award with Dalai Lama Renaissance which was narrated by Harrison Ford.

This is the third award for The Music In Me, at its world premiere in June, The Music In Me was awarded the prestigious Prix Pierre Salinger for Best Documentary at the 24th Annual Avignon Film Festival - the first time an Australian film had been screened in the history of the event.

Lisa Nesselson, European film critic for Variety has called the The Music In Me “A portrait of sheer human decency in the face of adversity… it’s hard to imagine a halfway thoughtful TV programmer – or audience – that wouldn’t warm to the heartache and triumph captured here.”

The Music in Me tells the profoundly moving story of the Merry Makers - a unique dance troupe based in Sydney comprising 70 dancers with some intellectual or physical disability who dance their way into the hearts and minds of all who see them perform. During the 63-minute documentary feature, the dancers and their families are filmed with engaging tenderness, empathy and candour as they prepare for the biggest show of their lives – a sell-out concert at Sydney’s Entertainment Centre.

Film producer Anne Kenyon and Merry Makers’ Artistic Director Lucinda Bryant travelled from Australia to Monaco to attend the film’s screening in Monte Carlo on Saturday 8th December.

Speaking from Sydney upon her return, Lucinda said: “We were thrilled with the audience’s overwhelming response - at the end of the film they just stood and cheered.  It was amazing!”

During 2007 the documentary has been screened at international film festivals in Avignon (France), Montreal, Os (Norway), Texas, New York, and Monaco.

2008 promises to be an equally busy year with official film festival selections and screening invitations already confirmed in the USA (Sedona International Film Festival), Italy (Cinema Senza Barrier, Milan) and UK (Swansea Film Festival Wales).
